ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. -- Edward Glinka, of Elmwood Park, died Nov. 18. He was 99.
He was born Feb. 6, 1917, in New York. Orphaned at the age of 3, he was raised by the sisters of the Felicia orphanage in Lodi.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific theater, earning a bronze star.
Returning to New Jersey, he married Genevieve Sofinski, also an orphan. Residing in Elmwood Park for nearly 70 years, they raised seven children.
He was a linotype operator for the Herald News. Always known as a gentleman, he was a parishioner of St. Leo's church and a man of faith, praying the rosary nightly. Self-taught, he enjoyed reading history and could easily converse about topics ranging from the Peloponnesian Wars to the present. He loved listening to all types of music. He and his wife, Genevieve, enjoyed planning and driving across the United States, especially visiting the national parks. After he retired, they enjoyed wintering yearly in Florida.
He was predeceased by his wife, Genevieve.
He is survived by his children, Thomas and his wife Pauline, Robert, James and his wife Elsie, William and his wife Mary, Carol Agreski and her husband Bernard, Cathryn Crudelle and her husband Thomas and Susan Marsella and her husband Joseph; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
There will be a funeral will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the Patrick J. Conte Funeral Home Inc., 274 Market St., Elmwood Park. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Leo’s R.C. Church, 324 Market St., Elmwood Park. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Saddle Brook. Visiting is from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
